FAQs
Why do I need my chimney swept?
Chimney sweeping is an essential part of maintaining your solid fuel heating appliance. It removes the build up of acidic soot and creosote. It also removes any blockages like birds nests, cobwebs and plant matter. This allows your chimney flue to work efficiently, allowing the passing of dangerous gases. A significant build up of creosote can also increase the risk of chimney fires
Why do I need a sweep certificate?
Did you know that many insurance companies require a sweep certificate as proof the chimney has been swept annually? In the event of a chimney fire claim if there is not a valid sweep certificate then your insurance may be invalid.
How often does my chimney needs sweeping?
- Wood - quarterly
- Bituminous coal - twice a year
- Smokeless fuel - at least once a year
- Oil - once a year
- Gas - once a year
How long does it take?
Between 40 minutes and one hour on a straightforward sweep with no blockages - a little more if the removal of a birds nest or other blockage is required.
Is it mess free?
It is mess free for most chimneys. However where there is a major amount of soot buildup or bird nest within the chimney it will be more involved. In those rare cases we will endeavour to contain debris as best we can.
What should I do prior to the appointment?
- Please move ornaments and the like away from the hearth to allow a clear working area and pathway.
- We would also ask you to clear ash, soot and other material away from the grate, and ensure stoves and fire grate is cool before we arrive.
- Cover any electrical items or light coloured fabrics of soft furnishings in the immediate area.
What happens to the soot?
The soot is bagged up in a plastic sack and left with the customer to either dispose in their household waste bin or take to landfill.
